Katrena's Scavenger Hunt #19 Under the Seas

Katrena's Scavenger Hunt #19 Under the Seas at Wildflower Bouquets
What is more fun than finding hidden treasure? This scavenger hunt focuses on plants and animals that live under the seas. This scavenger hunt works well with a water-themed or pirate-themed party. If you have multiple children playing, consider giving each child a small box (treasure chest) to color and decorate while you are hiding the clues. As players find each letter of the hidden message, they can place the letter in the treasure chest until the end when they assemble the letters to create the hidden message. (See graphics below.)

After everyone has completed the scavenger hunt, you might plan to have water games for a grand finale! This could be as simple as purchasing a few squirt bottles such as those that hold mustard and catsup and filling them with water. Hand them to the kids...I doubt that you'll need an explanation. If the weather is not cooperating or if you don't want everyone soaking wet, you might consider turning out the lights and having a glowstick party and pretend to be underwater - I have included a link to my glowstick workout playlist at the bottom of this article.

If you wish to turn this into a more educational activity...
Before the scavenger hunt, find web pages with information about each sea animal or plant featured in the scavenger hunt and take a few minutes to learn 3-5 facts about each one before giving the next riddle and encourage players to act out being each sea plant or animal. This hunt also includes some challenging vocabulary words, such as echolocation and vigilant.

If you wish to encourage the artistic side...
Before the scavenger hunt, find and print coloring pages featuring each sea animal or plant featured in the scavenger hunt and have the players color each one as the hunt progresses or provide all coloring pages at the end. Or find a good, clear photo of each sea animal or plant featured in the scavenger hunt and have the players to draw their own version of each one while providing a wide variety of art supplies such as crayons, markers, glitter glue, colored paper/scissors/glue, etc. Or any combination of the above.

Directions
  1. Have the players go to a room where you will not be hiding clues. My family did this as an indoor hunt, but it could be tweaked to be played outdoors.
  2. Print the rhyming riddles, answers, clues (if needed), and hidden message below. If multiple children are playing, print a hidden message for each player and cut out each letter. Hide multiples of the same letter in each hiding spot. For example, hide all of the "u's" together with one riddle.
  3. Keep the first riddle and hide each of the remaining riddles with one hidden message letter in the area described for answering the previous one - I've included hints for hiding the riddles; feel free to tweak as desired. The last hiding spot will only contain the last letter for the hidden message.
  4. Give the players the first riddle and one letter for the hidden message. Have the player to read the riddle and determine the missing word.
  5. As the players solve each riddle, give them a hint about where to hunt for the next riddle and letter.
NOTE: The hidden message letters spell Under the Seas. These letters may be hidden in the exact order for an easier level, or you may wish to scramble the order of letters and have players to assemble them at the end to discover the hidden message on their own. If the players are having a hard time solving the hidden message, you might start humming the song "Under the Sea" from The Little Mermaid.

If the players are having a hard time guessing the correct sea plant or animal, you can provide a word bank by cutting out the answers on the answer sheet and placing them in random order. Ask the player to pick out the answer that rhymes with the blue word in the riddle.

Katrena's Indoor Scavenger Hunt #18 Flowers

Katrena's Scavenger Hunt #18 Flowers
Spring has sprung with all its glorious beauty in my neck of the woods. I love to growing flowers and enjoy meandering through flower gardens of all types. This scavenger hunt features ten flowers. The clues often have quite a few hints for those who have studied the history of these beauties. This scavenger hunt could lend itself well to an outdoor hunt, but you may wish to take something like a penny to the back of the flower pictures to keep them from blowing away.

Most are well known by those of us who grow flowers, but this hunt may be challenging for those who aren't familiar with the names of flowers. Have no fear! I have included options to help identify the flowers. Each clue has an end-rhyming word in the second line and the last line includes an adjective that begins with the first letter of the flower. You have the option to offer a word bank if players are stumped.

This scavenger hunt might be additionally educational as some of the clues have a few vocabulary words that players might learn how to pronounce in addition to the meaning of the words. I chose photos that exemplified some of the more well-known varieties of these flowers; participants may wish to search for images of additional varieties. This would be a great time to plant your own flower garden after playing the game; you might consider planting a couple from the scavenger hunt. You might also consider going for a walk and identifying various flowers, taking photos of your favorites.

I wish to give credit to the various photos I used for this hunt. Many thanks to the photographers on Morguefile for providing these free of charge. See the graphic below for photographer names and URLs:

Preparation Before the Hunt (see graphics below for free printables)

  • Print the small flower picture page for yourself and cut out each small flower picture and place them on a table in a room where players will read each clue. If you are not sure how to identify the flowers, I've included pages with each flower labeled; you may wish to print a "cheat sheet" page for yourself and label each flower.
  • Print one small flower page for each participant and cut out each small flower picture.
  • Select a different room(s) and place the small flower pictures randomly around the room(s) in places where they can easily see the pictures.
  • Print the clue page.
  • Print the congratulations bouquet page (one for each participant) and hide in a place where players won't readily see them.
  • Print the answers to the clues if needed.
  • Print the word bank if needed.

Directions for the Flowers Scavenger Hunt

  1. Have players read the first clue and solve the riddle and identify the picture of the flower.
  2. After solving the riddle, players find and bring back the photo of the matching flower.
  3. Repeat for each riddle.
  4. After all riddles are solved and small flower pictures are found, have participants search for the congratulations bouquet(s).

Katrena's Indoor Scavenger Hunt #14 Famous Firsts

Famous Firsts Scavenger Hunt with Rhyming Clues
The first day of school is coming to my neck of the woods with lightening speed! I decided a scavenger hunt featuring famous firsts was in order for the occasion. This scavenger hunt features twelve famous firsts with clues that incorporate a variety of skills and topics, such as reading, grammar, sports, history, geography, study skills, life skills, and more.

I have designed twelve riddles with rhyming clues. The rhyming word is in red. Although this treasure hunt is designed for older kids, younger kids may be able to figure out the clues if you cut the answers and let them choose the rhyming word. Many of these riddles might spark additional conversations such as discussing more about air travel or various positions in baseball.

The directions for where to find the next clue can easily be altered to fit your individual needs. I chose places that were loosely connected to the topics in the riddles that might work well at home or at school. If you tweak, make a note of the changes.

Players can assemble the prize at the end to spell "FAMOUS FIRSTS." Hide the letters with the riddles in order, or you can create more of a challenge by scrambling the order.

While players are in another area...
  • Print the graphics below - one of each page and one prize sheet for each player.
  • Cut out the riddles.
  • Place the letters for FAMOUS FIRSTS with the riddles in order or scrambled - ensure that you provide one letter for each player with each riddle. All letters should be the same with each clue. For example, if you have two players, place two Os with a riddle.
  • Keep riddle #1.
  • Hide riddles #2 - 12 in the location for the answer for the previous riddle.
Then...
  • Give players the first riddle.
  • Once the players solve the riddle, provide a hint for finding the next riddle and letter.
  • After all riddles are solved and all letters are found, have players assemble the letters to spell FAMOUS FIRSTS.
I hope you enjoy my Famous Firsts scavenger hunt and thanks so much for visiting my Wildflower Bouquets blog!

You might also print on the back of paper that is ready for recycling.

Here are some additional resources related to conservation:

  • answer sheet for solving the clues

Katrena's Scavenger Hunt #8: Under the Same Sky

Katrena's Indoor Scavenger Hunt #8 Under the Same Sky
I recently received a nice note from an 11-year-old who requested that I develop scavenger hunt #8. Although I live in the United States, this reader is playing my Wildflower Bouquets games on the other side of the globe! That has inspired me to create a scavenger hunt that reminds us that we are all under the same sky and that we all call Earth our home.

Aizaz, this one is for you. I hope you like it!

This hunt includes ten rhyming riddles with a celestial theme. As each riddle is solved, the leader can give players a hint where to look for the next clue. I hid each riddle inside a folded letter found in the last graphic on this game. Suggestions with several options for hiding the clues make this scavenger hunt great for home or school. The letters might be hidden in order or scrambled to add another challenge level for the players to spell the terms at the conclusion of the game.

This hunt involves basic astronomy terms. Because the riddles rhyme, younger kids may be able to guess some of these, or you might take the opportunity to learn more about our sky together. Here are a few web sites that you might wish to study before attempting this treasure hunt. Some of the terms are easy, but others might be a bit more challenging!
Directions:
  1. Click on the images below to enlarge.
  2. Choose file-print to print the images.
  3. Hide each riddle in the locations designated below - you may wish to fold each inside a letter spelling the hidden message or you might exchange a letter for each solved clue.
  4. After all riddles are solved, players can assemble the letters to spell the secret message.
Here are the ten riddles for my Under the Same Sky scavenger hunt. You may wish to fold these inside each letter to spell the secret astronomy term:

Print and cut these letters or you might make them larger by cutting a piece of colored construction paper into ten pieces and writing each letter on a piece. I folded these around riddles #2 through #10 and placed the last one where players would look after solving the last riddle. Younger players might wish to name each letter. Scramble the order that players find each letter to make this treasure hunt more challenging.

Wizard of Oz Scavenger Hunt – Free Clues and a Surprise at the End!

Wizard of Oz Treasure Hunt Riddles and Clues © Katrena
We're off to solve some riddles and enjoy a scavenger hunt!

This Wizard of Oz themed indoor scavenger hunt highlights various scenes, characters, and life lessons from the popular original 1939 movie. It encourages literacy and critical thinking skills as kids read the rhyming clues, try to fill in the blanks, and then find, assemble, and read the final surprise. The scavenger hunt includes a short set-up time and very few supplies.

Click on the images below to enlarge before printing. Two images fit on one piece of paper.

Directions for playing the Wizard of Oz Scavenger Hunt
  1. Print the 10 riddles and location prompts and cut down the center, separating the riddles from the prompts.
  2. Print the 10 surprise ending clues, cut, and hide them in each area as described by each prompt.*
  3. Place a piece of construction paper over the riddles so that the child(ren) can only see the latest one.
  4. Have the child(ren) read the riddle and fill in the blank.
  5. Once the child(ren) successfully solves the riddle, read the prompt that matches the number on the riddle.
  6. The child(ren) will then search for the clue in the location described by the prompt.
  7. Once all clues are found, assemble the words so that they may read the surprise sentence!**
*Clues may be hidden in order, or you might add more of a challenge by mixing them up. You may wish to cut out construction paper and attach the clues to the colored paper or hide in a colored paper pocket to add a little variety. If more than one child is playing, print a set of clues for each child, hiding each set in the described area so that every child will have the surprise sentence at the end.
**You might wish to have the child(ren) glue the sentence on a colorful piece of paper and draw his or her own picture of a Wizard of Oz scene as a memento.

Visit Katrena's Wildflower Bouquets site map for more scavenger hunts, printables, and family-friendly activities. If you are looking for a fun Wizard of Oz travel destination, you might consider Autumn at Oz.
