Katrena's Indoor Scavenger Hunt #17: Weather

Katrena's Indoor Scavenger Hunt #17: Weather
This indoor scavenger hunt features rhyming riddles for ten different types of weather. I have included a list of answers and ideas for hiding the riddles as well as an added hidden message for finding with the clues. I hope your family enjoys this scavenger hunt as much as we have. At the moment we are snowed in and looking for fun indoor activities!

Directions

  1. Have the players go to a room where you will not be hiding clues.
  2. Print the riddles, answers, hints for finding the riddles, and hidden message.
  3. Ensure that you have frozen treats for all players (optional).
  4. Keep the first riddle and one letter of the hidden message and hide each of the remaining riddles with one hidden message letter in the area described for answering the previous one. The last place will only contain the last letter for the hidden message.
  5. Give the players the first riddle and one letter for the hidden message.
  6. As the players solve each riddle, give them a hint about where to hunt for the next riddle and letter.
  7. Surprise the players with a frozen treat after solving the last riddle!
NOTE: The hidden message letters spell meteorology, which is the study of the atmosphere with an emphasis on weather and forecasting the weather. These letters may be hidden in the exact order for an easier level, or you may wish to scramble the order of letters to add another challenge to the scavenger hunt. I hid mine in the opposite order so the kids would find the double letters "ME" at the last station. ("Oh, this popsicle is for ME?")

If the players are having a hard time guessing the correct type of weather, you can provide a word bank using the answer sheet. Ask the player to pick out the answer that rhymes with the blue letter in the riddle.

Katrena's Indoor Scavenger Hunt #14 Famous Firsts

Famous Firsts Scavenger Hunt with Rhyming Clues
The first day of school is coming to my neck of the woods with lightening speed! I decided a scavenger hunt featuring famous firsts was in order for the occasion. This scavenger hunt features twelve famous firsts with clues that incorporate a variety of skills and topics, such as reading, grammar, sports, history, geography, study skills, life skills, and more.

I have designed twelve riddles with rhyming clues. The rhyming word is in red. Although this treasure hunt is designed for older kids, younger kids may be able to figure out the clues if you cut the answers and let them choose the rhyming word. Many of these riddles might spark additional conversations such as discussing more about air travel or various positions in baseball.

The directions for where to find the next clue can easily be altered to fit your individual needs. I chose places that were loosely connected to the topics in the riddles that might work well at home or at school. If you tweak, make a note of the changes.

Players can assemble the prize at the end to spell "FAMOUS FIRSTS." Hide the letters with the riddles in order, or you can create more of a challenge by scrambling the order.

While players are in another area...
  • Print the graphics below - one of each page and one prize sheet for each player.
  • Cut out the riddles.
  • Place the letters for FAMOUS FIRSTS with the riddles in order or scrambled - ensure that you provide one letter for each player with each riddle. All letters should be the same with each clue. For example, if you have two players, place two Os with a riddle.
  • Keep riddle #1.
  • Hide riddles #2 - 12 in the location for the answer for the previous riddle.
Then...
  • Give players the first riddle.
  • Once the players solve the riddle, provide a hint for finding the next riddle and letter.
  • After all riddles are solved and all letters are found, have players assemble the letters to spell FAMOUS FIRSTS.
I hope you enjoy my Famous Firsts scavenger hunt and thanks so much for visiting my Wildflower Bouquets blog!

Katrena's Scavenger Hunt #13 Traditional Indoor Treasure Hunt

Katrena's Free Scavenger Hunt #13
Having a variety of indoor activities can help keep the kids away from the electronic devices and interacting with one another. Scavenger hunts are a fun and entertaining way to encourage reading, teamwork if more than one child is playing, and offers that mysterious quality that keeps everyone engaged!

This is my thirteenth treasure hunt in this series. It features twelve clues, answers, and printable awards at the end. If you have more than one child playing, you may wish to print multiple copies of the clues or have the kids to take turns finding one set. You can always make scavenger hunts easier or harder by how you hide the clues.

Directions:
  1. Have the players go to another area while you print, cut, and hide clues.
  2. Click on each image below to enlarge - you may fit two pages on one sheet of paper.
  3. Click file-print to print desired sheets.
  4. Cut out each clue and the rewards.
  5. Keep the first clue - hide clue #2 in the answer for clue #1, hide clue #3 in the answer for clue #2, etc. and then hide the reward(s) in the answer for clue #12
  6. Give the players clue #1 and let the hunt begin!
I hope you enjoy this scavenger hunt. You might wish to read more of my articles:

How to Make a Digital Photo Scavenger Hunt – So Simple and Quick!

How to Make a Quick and Easy Scavenger Hunt © Katrena
Scavenger hunts are some of my kids' favorite activities. They are always excited when I come up with a new one, and I often post my clues and activities on this blog so that others can share in the excitement.

Indoor Scavenger Hunt Ideas © Katrena
One of the easiest scavenger hunts imaginable is a digital photo version. The first time I tried one of these was at a children's museum. My youngest one was thrilled to be in an area that my two older kids found a little boring. No worries! I just slipped around the room snapping pictures of some objects, handed my digital camera over to the kids, and suddenly the area was incredibly cool for everyone!

Making a digital scavenger hunt can work great even if you have kids of different ages and ability levels. Simply make pictures of objects in a designated area. Make sure you take pictures that are a multiple of the number of kids who will be playing. For example, I have three daughters, so I might take 24 pictures, giving each child the opportunity to find eight items.

Provide directions for the kids, such as being very careful with the digital camera if you have them to carry it and to make sure not to point out the object if someone else is hunting for it. If you are taking pictures with certain children in mind, let the children know what order to take turns. For example, a younger child might need pictures of objects that are lower or can easily be seen from his or her vantage point and you might challenge older children by taking photos of a small portion of an object.

Once the kids have found all of the pictures, you might want to provide a prize or have another game idea ready. Don't be surprised if they ask you to do this one again! A digital scavenger hunt can work well inside or outside, and each one can be as unique as you wish to make it.

Wizard of Oz Scavenger Hunt – Free Clues and a Surprise at the End!

Wizard of Oz Treasure Hunt Riddles and Clues © Katrena
We're off to solve some riddles and enjoy a scavenger hunt!

This Wizard of Oz themed indoor scavenger hunt highlights various scenes, characters, and life lessons from the popular original 1939 movie. It encourages literacy and critical thinking skills as kids read the rhyming clues, try to fill in the blanks, and then find, assemble, and read the final surprise. The scavenger hunt includes a short set-up time and very few supplies.

Click on the images below to enlarge before printing. Two images fit on one piece of paper.

Directions for playing the Wizard of Oz Scavenger Hunt
  1. Print the 10 riddles and location prompts and cut down the center, separating the riddles from the prompts.
  2. Print the 10 surprise ending clues, cut, and hide them in each area as described by each prompt.*
  3. Place a piece of construction paper over the riddles so that the child(ren) can only see the latest one.
  4. Have the child(ren) read the riddle and fill in the blank.
  5. Once the child(ren) successfully solves the riddle, read the prompt that matches the number on the riddle.
  6. The child(ren) will then search for the clue in the location described by the prompt.
  7. Once all clues are found, assemble the words so that they may read the surprise sentence!**
*Clues may be hidden in order, or you might add more of a challenge by mixing them up. You may wish to cut out construction paper and attach the clues to the colored paper or hide in a colored paper pocket to add a little variety. If more than one child is playing, print a set of clues for each child, hiding each set in the described area so that every child will have the surprise sentence at the end.
**You might wish to have the child(ren) glue the sentence on a colorful piece of paper and draw his or her own picture of a Wizard of Oz scene as a memento.

Katrena's Scavenger Hunt #4 With Alphabet Code Clues

Katrena's Indoor Scavenger Hunt #4 With Alphabet Code Clues
Scavenger hunts can be loads of fun for the kids, but sometimes they seem to be over so quickly! This indoor scavenger hunt is a great way to sneak in a little practice with code reading and spelling as the kids must stop and find matching letters for each picture in order to determine where to search next.

You can make this one tougher by hiding the clues in unexpected places at the code's hint. If you have older and younger kids working together, you might wish to hide them so that the clues are easily visible and encourage the older kids to solve the code while the younger kids hunt for the clues.

How to play Katrena's alphabet code treasure hunt
  1. Print the alphabet code (click on the image to enlarge and then select "file" and "print") – the kids will use this to crack the code on the clues.
  2. Print the prizes in code and choose which one(s) you wish to use (1st is "Way to Go", 2nd is "Awesome", 3rd is "Fabulous")
  3. Print clues #1-10 and cut on the horizontal lines, leaving the blank space on the right intact.
  4. Keep clue #1.
  5. Hide clue #2 in the microwave.
  6. Hide clue #3 with the toothbrushes.
  7. Hide clue #4 in the kitchen sink.
  8. Hide clue #5 on the couch.
  9. Hide clue #6 under a bedroom pillow.
  10. Hide clue #7 on the telephone.
  11. Hide clue #8 in a chair.
  12. Hide clue #9 in the refrigerator.
  13. Hide clue #10 on the bookshelf.
  14. Place prize in the stove.
  15. Give clue #1 to the person(s) doing the scavenger hunt.

Indoor scavenger hunts can be a great way to encourage the kids to work toward a goal. Adding Colors Indoor Scavenger Hunt – Free Clues and Answers

Scavenger Hunt and Graphing Activity
Taking the three primary colors of yellow, red, and blue can produce an amazing array of new hues! I thought it would be fun to combine the mystery of a scavenger hunt with the "math facts" of adding colors and graphing.

How to Use the Adding Colors Scavenger Hunt
While the kids are in another room...
  • Print the clues (picture/rhyming) and cut them out (click on each image to enlarge and then select "file" and "print" and then click the back arrow to return to this article).
  • Print the graphing chart (easy/advanced).
  • Print the hidden message clues page, cut out each and hide in the area represented by the graph.
Then...
  1. Have the child(ren) pick a clue to solve.
  2. Tell them to graph the color combination (challenge the older ones by having them graph in both directions).
  3. Verify the answer and have the kid(s) look in the area determined by the graph until they have found all six clues.
  4. Tell the kids to determine the hidden message by arranging the colorful clues into a sentence.

Easy Clues for Adding Colors Scavenger Hunt
Rhyming Clues for Adding Colors Scavenger Hunt
This indoor scavenger hunt includes both simple picture clues for the visually oriented children and rhyming clues for those who respond well to reading. You might want to hide the hidden message clues in a challenging way for older kids or make them much easier to find if you are playing with preschoolers.

Easy Chart for Adding Colors Scavenger Hunt
Advanced Chart for Adding Colors Scavenger Hunt
This game also incorporates reading graphs! I created two versions of the chart. The easier version includes shading hints while the harder version requires the kids to read to determine the correct cells. I have included an answer key for anyone who wishes to verify the answers.
