Katrena's Indoor Scavenger Hunt #16

This scavenger hunt is all about tools. Lots of people are interested to know what is in a toolbox. Some names of tools and supplies in this hunt are a little more challenging than others; however, I have included rhyming riddles to help those who might not be as familiar with tool names. I recommend having a word bank list on hand if the players get stumped on a riddle.

My Papaw was a brick mason and taught himself how to build houses. He was amazingly talented! I remember when I was younger, he sent me out to his truck, filled to the brim with what looked to be a million different tools, to retrieve one of those mysterious items. He told me the name of the tool, but I quickly realized my search would be in vain unless I gathered more information. Papaw carefully and patiently described the tool; I was eventually able to deliver the item. Knowing the names of various tools has its advantages.

Before the Hunt

1. Print and cut out the rhyming riddles below.
2. Print the answers below if needed - you might cut out only the answers as a word bank if needed.
3. Print the prizes below.
4. Gather the tools listed in the answers or print pictures of the items. Use a picture of the saw and any other tools that might pose a safety hazard for participants. *An adult may need to accompany the participant to each area and to ensure safety, depending on the age, maturity, and ability of the participants if you are using any actual tools.
5. Place an empty box or toolbox in the starting area.
6. Keep Riddle #1.
7. Tape Riddle #2 onto the tool described on Riddle #1.
8. Repeat until Riddles #2-12 are attached to a tool/picture.
9. Tape a prize to the answer for Riddle #12.
10. Hide the tools/pictures around the house. If the weather is nice, consider hiding them outside. To prevent them from finding additional tools early, you might designate one room or area for searching for each riddle - if you do this, write down the rooms or areas in order.

Directions for Players

1. Go over safety rules - no running and do not touch any sharp edges!
2. Give the player(s) Riddle #1.
3. Once they solve the riddle, have them find that item and place it in the toolbox. Tell players which room or area in which to search if you have designated areas for each tool.
4. Repeat until all riddles are solved and all tools/pictures are found and in the toolbox and the final prize is found.

Katrena's Indoor Scavenger Hunt #6: Heart Treasure Hunt

Heart Themed Treasure Hunt with Rhyming Clues

This unique heart scavenger hunt includes lots of challenges but is simple and easily adaptable to different levels. I created this game as a Valentine's treasure hunt, but it can be fun to play any time of year. Educational information about the heart or circulatory system can compliment this indoor game nicely.

This is a short one with only five rhyming clues, but it can easily take as long as my scavenger hunts with ten clues if you hide the letters in challenging spots. One particularly fun part of this hunt is that the first letter of each riddle's answer also spells the word "heart." The kids might discover this as they begin to find the letters, which can add to the excitement. The game also encourages reading, rhyming, and problem solving. You can also incorporate teamwork and interdependence if you have several kids playing.

Because the clues only specify a room, you can play this game many times while making it new each time by choosing different hiding places within the rooms.

Directions for Heart Scavenger Hunt #6:

While the kids are in another area:

1. Print clues #1-5 and cut on lines.
2. Print answers #1-5 and cut on lines.
3. Print HEART and cut on lines.
4. Hide H in the bathroom.
5. Hide E in the kitchen.
6. Hide A in the hall.
7. Hide R in the bedroom.
8. Hide T in the living room.

Then:

1. Give clue #1 to the person(s) who will be hunting.
2. Once the riddle is solved, give the hunter(s) the matching printed answer with the room location.

Scavengers hunts are always a hit at my house. This indoor treasure hunt challenges the kids with rhyming clues that will get them searching throughout the house. The red word in each clue gives a hint for the answer because the answer rhymes with or sounds very similar to that word.

Directions for Katrena's Indoor Scavenger Hunt #2:

1. Print clues #1-10 (click on the image to enlarge and then select "file" and "print") and cut on the lines.
2. Keep clue #1.
3. Hide clue #2 at the answer for clue #1.
4. Hide clue #3 at the answer for clue #2.
5. Hide clue #4 at the answer for clue #3.
6. Hide clue #5 at the answer for clue #4.
7. Hide clue #6 at the answer for clue #5.
8. Hide clue #7 at the answer for clue #6.
9. Hide clue #8 at the answer for clue #7.
10. Hide clue #9 at the answer for clue #8.
11. Hide clue #10 at the answer for clue #9.
12. Place prize or reward at the answer for clue #10.
13. Give clue #1 to the person(s) doing the scavenger hunt.

If you have kids of various ages, you might want to have them work together as a team or take turns solving and searching for the clues.

CLUE #3 This thing has lots of keys, But they won’t play a chord. Instead they have letters and numbers. The next clue is near the ______!	CLUE #4 You might open these up on warm spring days, But they will be shut tight when the temperature is zero. It is something you look through to see outside. You’ll find the next clue on a ________!
CLUE #5 Perhaps you have worked up an appetite from all this searching? Is it food you now crave? Maybe you should heat up a snack…. The next clue is in the _____!	CLUE #6 This thing is quite useful for brushing, but please don't use it on your hair. Maybe you forget to brush with it if you are in a rush. CLUE #7 This thing just lies around on the floor, If it were a person, it might be called a slug. Instead you might wipe your feet on it. The next clue can be found near the _____! CLUE #9 This thing may get quite full, It might hold dolls or trucks or blocks. It can be useful for holding items that you don't want sitting out. Maybe you’ll find the next clue in the ______!	CLUE #10 After all this work, you might need to rest. Are your feet telling you “Ouch?” This thing has cushions and is a great place to sit. Find the last item somewhere near the ______!
